In addition to coping with rock-bottom prices for their products, pork producers and processors in Québec now face the tightening of the Farm Income Stabilization Insurance program. Although details on the latest measures have yet to be announced, the industry is bound to become smaller and conditions even more challenging.
In their objective of reducing expenses for government, these blanket measures are likely to create additional unimaginable problems, including an increase in average farm size and the disappearance of smaller producers due to lower performance, loss of jobs in the industry and higher food prices over the medium term, to name only a few.
In my opinion, adopting measures targeting the elimination of regulatory gaps between the various Canadian provinces and the United States would have been much more logical.
In the meantime, duBreton will continue to support family-owned local businesses and help smaller farms to maximize their revenue with its programs – certified organic pork, pork certified humane, and pork raised without antibiotics.
With our dedication and your support, we can continue to offer you superior-quality products that exceed your expectations while remaining a responsible company committed to our communities.
