THE QUEBEC PORK PRODUCERS UNION, A SPECIALIZED FEDERATION OF THE UPA, REQUESTS THE RECUSAL OF A QUEBEC SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE

St-Bernard, January 27, 2026 – During a hearing before the Quebec Superior Court on Thursday, January 22, 2026, the attorney for the Quebec Pork Producers Union, Me Louis Coallier of the firm DHC, announced the intention to file a motion to recuse the judge assigned to the case.

The recusal of a judge is an exceptional procedure aimed at removing a judge when there is a reasonable apprehension of bias, based on serious grounds and specific facts.

The Quebec Pork Producers Union must file the details of its motion through its attorney by March 2.

It should be noted that this hearing before the Superior Court was intended to review a decision by the Régie des marchés agricoles et alimentaires du Québec, in order to resolve the dispute between duBreton and the Quebec Pork Producers Union. duBreton is challenging what it considers to be the illegal collection of fees and a contribution applied to its production of organic and animal-welfare-certified pigs, related to surplus production in so-called commodity pork. According to duBreton, these fees and contributions were used to finance issues specific to the commodity pork sector, which have no connection to the production of organic and animal-welfare-certified pigs.

It is also important to note that another dispute between the Quebec Pork Producers Union and duBreton is pending before the Superior Court. In that case, the union is seeking to annul an order from the Régie des marchés agricoles et alimentaires du Québec requiring a REFERENDUM among all Quebec pork producers to determine whether they are in favor of excluding organic and animal-welfare-certified pigs from the collective marketing system. The hearing on this matter is scheduled for March 16 and 17.

“These are costly and complex procedures, solely because the Quebec Pork Producers Union and the UPA refuse to consult their members objectively and make room for innovative producers. Agricultural regulations in Quebec are outdated and belong to another era. It’s time to bring hope and dynamism back to this sector,” says Vincent Breton, president of duBreton, a global leader in organic pork production.
